bassins29In the canton of Vaud, at an altitude of 750 m, overlooking Lake Geneva, Bassins is served by the Geneva-Lausanne motorway and a railway line.

The church Notre-Dame de Bassins probably became Cluniac in the 11th century, following a donation made to Cluny by Humbert I, lord of Cossonay and Prangins. Pope Lucius III confirmed in 1183 this Cluniac possession, placed under the control of the monastery of Payerne.

The small priory which is born seems to be the center of an active agricultural exploitation, and the seigniorial rights of the monks are allied with those of the local lords: the lords of Prangins had long the right to represent the priory in justice and to carry out the punishment of those found guilty. The prior of Payerne keeps a strong hold on Basins until the early sixteenth century, when he appointed the castellan and other officers of the place. In 1536, the Protestant Reformation ended several centuries of Clunisian presence in Bassins.
